About us

The Orewa Sea Scout group is part of the Scouts New Zealand Organization since April 4th, 1960.ย We are a very active Sea Scout group operating out of Orewa, which is a small seaside town about 25km north of Auckland.

Scouting is not just about knots, woggles and scarves, and itโ€™s not just for boys either! Scouts is about fun and personal development: this means promoting the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of the individual, helping them achieve their full potential.

In SCOUTS, we believe that young people develop best when they are โ€˜learning by doingโ€™, when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves.

The New Zealand program is broken in to five age units; Keas (ages 5-8), Cubs (ages 8-10), Scouts (ages 11-13), Venturers (14-18), and Rovers (ages 19-26).ย As Scouts gain maturity and experience, they are encouraged to take on more responsibility for organizing and overseeing their own activities.

We run various outdoor activities based on the Scouting New Zealand national programs.ย Our younger Keas have a fun program of discovery, learning by sharing, and water safety during the summer months; Cubs participate in many outdoor adventures, camps, kayaking and swimming, and learning about volunteering in the community around us; Scouts and Venturers have a strong focus on water based activities and are further challenged by a program of achievement, leadership, mentorship and service. This can involve attending adventure camps, jamborees and a national schools, plus with the group being an approved Award Unit, they are also able to obtain The Duke of Edinburghโ€™s Hillary Awards alongside the Scout Award Scheme.

Scouts groups are supported by a Group Committee made up of interested parents and other adults in the community.

Orewa Sea Scout group has always had, and continues to have, a long term commitment to the youth of the Orewa, Millwater, Red Beach & Silverdale Communities.  By guiding and teaching them scouting, water safety and boating skills we believe this equips them to become worthwhile and valuable members of our community.

Our โ€˜shipโ€™ is situated right on the beach at 467 Hibiscus Coast Highway, northernmost end of Orewa Beach.
