Jamboree 2023/24

Orewa Contingent – 23rd NZ Scout Jamboree

NZ Scout Jamboree is the largest event in the National Scouting calendar. Every three years over 1000 volunteers put together action-packed days for over 2500 youth members of the Scouting movement. It’s the event of a lifetime for many participants and often the highlight of their Scouting careers.

They will be challenged individually and collectively, pushed out of their comfort zones, entertained and inspired. Scouts learn to both be independent and to work together with many different people and small teams to participate in various challenges. Scouts will learn new skills and responsibilities, meet people from across the world and very likely return home from the Jamboree a different Scout and person altogether!

A Jamboree contingent is made up of a maximum 36 scouts and 7 leaders. A leader is assigned to each patrol and there is a Jamboree Troop Leader per contingent.

Programme

  • There is 9 days of Jamboree: 30th December 2023 – 7th January 2024
  • Core activity days with a mixture of on-site and off-site activities
  • Off-site whole days, and includes 1 overnight camping night and rest of the nights are on-site, and includes half-days of activities, a duty patrol day with a scheduled service activity, a Jamboree Patrol day, & New Years Day
  • Evening programmes will be run on-site Special activities will be held for PL’s (as a thank you). Plenty of drop-in free time activities
  • Camp recreational spaces; areas to hang out, badge swap, play games, etc.
  • Key themes from the Jamboree Patrol are: TBC

Eligibility

To attend the 23rd New Zealand Jamboree, the youth eligibility criteria based on the Scouts NZ transition policy have been released.

These criteria are designed to ensure the Scouts are better prepared for their Jamboree experience:

  • Scout youth must be between 11 and 15 years old (age at the start of Jamboree).
  • The Scout must be an invested Scout by the 30th December 2023, having followed Scouts New Zealand Transition policy.
  • The Scout has paid the appropriate Jamboree fee by the due date.
  • The Scout should be in the section for preferably more than a term, ideally not less than two terms. This allows our scout to be able to be familiar with the camping and other aspects of being a scout.
  • The Scout must have the approval of their parents or guardians, Scout Leader, and Group Leader.

Pre-Jam Camps

These camps are important preparation to ensure the contingent is ready to go to Jamboree. Scouts will be placed in their Jamboree patrols. We are likely to hold these in conjunction with Awatuna and Orewa scout groups again.

  • Pre-Jam Camp 1: 2 nights at Motu Moana – May 26-28 2023.
  • Pre-Jam Camp 2: Location TBC, 2 nights (late Oct or early Nov)

The cost for these camps is factored in the Jamboree fee.

Fees

Calculations have the average at around $1500 per Scout. This includes $1.190 attendance fee. Costs of uniform, transport, pre-jam camps, equipment and leaders fees make up the other parts. A contingency of 10% will be added to the final estimate and any surplus refunded after jamboree.

Scouts are fully expected to help fundraise a large chunk of these costs themselves by participating in events organised by the jamboree fundraising committee. It is quite common for some scouts to fundraise their entirety of their fee if they start early enough.

Payment will be staged through the year, and also based on fundraising progress.

Uniform

Each scout will be issued a contingent uniform they will wear at the Jamboree. This consists of 2 polo dry-fit shirts, a bucket hat, a special scarf & woggle made for our contingent, and 20-30 swap badges.

Kit Required

  • Camp stretcher – that a plastic box can fit under. No safari style.
  • Stretcher
  • Air mattress
  • Plastic container (sistema 60L)
  • Plus gear list recommended by the Scout Leaders

Parent Help Required

An event of this size requires help from parents and the scouts to be fully engaged with the process of getting their troop to Jamboree. It would be too much to expect the leaders to be able to organize everything on top of weekly programmes and events. Help is need in the following positions:

  • Jamboree Treasurer – Can you help?
  • Clothing Coordinator x1– a uniform needs to be sought, sizes obtained for the scouts and leaders, a scarf designed. Quotes obtained for these then ordered. Can you help?
  • Fundraising Sub-committee – All scouts are helping on this while we need a sub-committee to help organising the events.. So far we have organised a Quiz night, Sausage Sizzles, Pies Fundraiser.
All ideas are welcome and can be presented at our fundraising meetings (eg. selling fire wood, raffles, pies, chocolates, cake stall, car boot sale, movie night, disco, quiz, car wash, pizza night, lawn mowing, garden clean ups, sausage sizzle, etc).
    Can you help?
  • Grants x1 – if we can obtain grants for the leader fees, costs of the uniform, transport etc then this can massively reduce everyones’ fees. The group existing processes and forms can be used for this, and our committee members can guide you though the paperwork that is usually required and will be able to provide it. Can you help?
  • Closer to the time we will also need help with transport, badge sewing, packing and equipment.

Scout Expectations

  • You will need to complete their Bronze Award (at least two terms of good attendance to be able to complete this award)
  • The scout ideally should have camped a minimum of ‘five nights camping’ in the Scouts section
  • Come up with a contingent name
  • Help design the uniform and contingent badge
  • Help design and build the gateway
  • Fundraise their own fees
  • Attend at least one pre-jam camp
  • Jamboree PLs and APLs will be selected at Pre-Jam camps
  • Give everything a try, follow the Scout Law and have fun!

How To Secure A Place

To secure a place a $200 deposit for each scout will be required. Please pay to 06-0383-0022118-00

Jamboree contingent will be strictly allocated on the basis of the date of the deposit received.

After the 36 places have been filled the date of deposit received will determine the order on the waitlist.

Venturers at Jamboree

Venturers have always had the chance to apply to attend Jamboree as an activity/base helper. All the venturers stay in a combined separate venturer camp site and are not directly part of the Scout Contingents.

With COVID some older scouts now may have missed going to this and the last Jamboree (too young for the 2019 Jamboree, over-age for this one) so some changes have been implemented for the upcoming Jamboree:

For all those youth who are 15 years old (age at the start of Jamboree) and over, there is now a hybrid option called Venturer Active to attend and do the activities whilst staying on the venturer camp. They won’t be attending as Scouts.

The Venturer Active participants, aged 15-year-old up to 16 years and four months, who are Venturers, will be based at the JST site. They will participate in activities at Jamboree as a Patrol. Assignment to Patrols will follow registration, and yes, they will be encouraged to engage with their other Venturer Active Patrol members before they arrive at the Jamboree. Details to follow in the journey to the 23rd Aotearoa Scout Jamboree next year.

Catering for all Venturer Active participants will be via the Staff cafeteria.

Venturer Active participants in their Patrols will be involved in the Hamilton City or Waikato area community service projects. JLT is currently investigating the possibilities of Scouting service projects.

When Venturer Active participants are not involved with Jamboree activities, JST will cater for their spare time based on site.

Can Venturer Active participants visit the troop line at the Jamboree?
Venturer Active participants, like any visitor, will need permission to come on-site at the Jamboree and take personal responsibility for leaving the JST base site to visit the troop line and to advise the JST management team of their whereabouts for Health and Safety reasons.

What about those Young people between the ages of 16 and 16 years and four months?
Those between 16 and 16 years and four months will choose to either be in Venturer Active or JST completing service.

What about those Young people over 16 years, four mouths and one day?
Those over 16 years, four months and one day will be automatically assigned to JST.

What is the fee?
Young people who attend as Venturer Active, the Jamboree fee will be the same as the Youth fee, and those attending as JST will be the same as the Staff fee. Our Contingent Leader will be able to provide this before you pre-register.
