Keas
Last updated Feb.2024
Keas are our most junior group for both Girls and Boys from 5.5yrs to 8 yrs old approximately. Once the kids reach the age of 8 to 8.5 years they can move up to the Cubs section (which goes from 8yrs to 11 yrs) if they feel they’re ready for the next challenge.
We are Sea Scouts, however we follow the same scouting award programme as all scouting groups and add a naval/marine element to it as we’re one of the few groups in the country with an official Royal New Zealand Navy Recognition.
Keas meet on Thursdays from 4:30pm until 5:30pm during school terms.
As a Kea your youth will interact with nature and learn to share through cooperation and teamwork. Keas also engage in both active and quiet games, stories, creative crafts, play-acting and singing, swimming and other water-based activities; hiking, orienteering, sleepovers and many more activities that are part of our National Program; as well as some National, Regional, Zone and Group events that are planned throughout the year for all our sections.
Joining Age: we think it is ideal that children join Scouts not before they have been in school for at least a whole school-term after turning 5yrs of age, as it helps with setting routines for younger children as well as expectations about being a part of a larger group not only indoors but outdoors as well. We know that not all kids are the same so we leave this decision to the parents and we can help assess their readiness during the trial visits.
Trial Nights: Once you’re invited, you are welcome to try out Keas for 3 consecutive weeks before deciding if you would like to join up (although you are welcome to join immediately without trialling).
Waitlist: Our Keas Section is at full capacity at the moment, and waiting times are over a year. So we have decided to CLOSE our waitlist and we are not accepting new membership applications unless Parent/Guardian volunteers to become a Kea Leader. (Last updated Feb 2024)
